The old cast is back with Sarah Jessica Parker as Carrie Bradshaw Preston, Kim Cattrell as the outrageous Samantha Jones, Kristen Davis as Charlotte York Goldenblatt and Cynthia Nixon as Miranda Hobbes. To complement them are their significant others, Chris Noth as Carrie's Big and John Corbett as former boyfriend, Aidan Shaw. Evan Handler returns as Harry Goldenblatt and David Eigenberg stars as Steve Brady. Samantha's former boyfriend and client, Jared Smith, played by Jason Lewis is the catalyst for their vacation to a foreign land.
New York City, Menopause and TV in the Bedroom
Two years since the last installment in the series, Carrie faces her mid-life crisis, second only to Samantha's menopausal symptoms. As she mourns all that city once provided her, Big buys a TV for their bedroom. Charlotte continues to perfect perfection as a mother, including wearing heels at home while lawyer, Miranda, struggles just to find time for motherhood.
Sex Without the City
The fifth main character, the city, appears to have a crisis of its own for halfway through the film, the location is moved to the Middle East allowing the four to leave their problems at home.
The Movie Trailer and Abu Dhabi
As the movie trailer suggests, the glamour, this time around, is provided by a high-end beach resort in Abu Dhabi. No expense is spared in the furnishings or the contents of the foursome's luggage. Decked out in some of the best fashion eye candy, the setting is only lacking a runway and air conditioning for the desert oasis.
From Cable TV to Film Franchise
With the characters established from a successful cable TV run and a movie, the film hops right into the issues. True to form, the provocative Samantha Jones, shocking as the obnoxious American in a foreign land provides comic relief while moving the plot forward.
The setups are slick and the payoffs genuine but as lavish as the movie is, the plot lacks, to put it in Carrie's own words, sparkle. The film provides many opportunities to create tension, but is never taken to the edge. For example, the gulf between Big and Carrie could be larger and more in their relationship at stake.
Wishing for Another Sequel
All in all, though, Sex and the City 2 fits neatly into the chick flick category as pure entertainment. The character's woes are authentic and their reactions to their situations in tune with their character. Still drawn to live vicariously through the antics of these four women, if there is a Sex and the City 3, it will be a long two year wait.
