Although working on the crew of a movie may not be steady, there is the thrill of seeing a project come together. As appealing as that may seem, be prepared to work long hours, day after day.
Before the shooting even begins, people have been preparing for months, maybe even years for the few days to a few months of filming a movie. They have intimate knowledge of what needs to be done and they will hire based on their needs.
A Resume of Skills and Qualifications
To get their attention as a professional, prepare a one-page resume. In the summary , list any outstanding skills and qualifications, such as theatrical work.
Mentioning excellent sewing skills may lead to a position in costumes. Handy with a hammer could lead to a job building a set. Strong computer skills, especially on a Mac may be appropriate for the production office. Hair and makeup artists are also needed for the actors/actresses.
Jobs may be available for those with good driving records in transportation or as a production assistant.
Outstanding Personal Traits
Include such personal traits as a good sense of humor and great communication skills if they apply. Knowing that a crew can become very large, dealing with diverse groups of people in a volunteer activity is worth mentioning.
Education, Workshop and Seminars
Besides any college degrees directly related to filmmaking, be sure to list any applicable seminars such as set lighting or grip workshops.
To prepare for being on a movie set, consider taking the course on production assisting or purchasing the manual at Production Assistant Training Seminar or P.A.T.S.
Publicize Availability for a Movie Crew Position
Most states have film commissions especially if the state provides tax incentives for films made in that state. Also some large cities support local film groups. They maintain databases of qualified movie crew allowing production companies to search by need. Update the profile regularly as crew credentials pile up.
Network with Production Companies
Besides a resume, have business cards made. If experienced and looking for a certain crew position, state it on the card. At a minimum, include name, phone number and email.
Some film commissions also have industry mixers where they invite production companies with upcoming features to film to attend and solicit for crew members. Come prepared with business cards and a pitch detailing skills and availability.
From Movie Buff to On-the-Set
With a little effort and some luck, a position on the film crew can be obtained. Always be polite, professional and ready to do anything asked and like any Hollywood career, perhaps a new talent will be discovered.
